Craniosacral Therapy in Berlin – Gentle Bodywork for Deep Relaxation
What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral therapy according to Upledger is a gentle, hands-on bodywork method with roots in osteopathic approaches. It focuses on the craniosacral system: the structures surrounding the brain and spinal cord, from the skull — the cranium — to the sacrum.
This system includes the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the central nervous system.
Through very subtle touch, craniosacral therapy aims to support relaxation, regulation and body awareness. Many clients experience the treatment as calming, grounding and deeply relaxing.
What is the difference between Craniosacral Therapy and a regular massage?
Unlike classical massage, craniosacral therapy usually uses very light touch. The practitioner does not knead the muscles or apply strong pressure. Instead, the hands listen to subtle movements in the tissues, fascia, membranes and fluids of the body.
While massage often focuses directly on muscles and muscular tension, craniosacral therapy works in a more subtle way with the nervous system, connective tissue and surrounding fascia.
Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy may support relaxation, body awareness and the release of physical tension.
A central idea of craniosacral work is that the body has an inherent capacity to move towards balance. The role of the practitioner is not to force change, but to listen carefully with the hands and support the body in finding more ease and regulation.
Craniosacral therapy may be a valuable complementary practice for people who feel tense, exhausted, overwhelmed or disconnected from their body. Regular sessions may support relaxation, resilience, body awareness and inner balance.
What happens during a Craniosacral Therapy Session?
A craniosacral therapy session usually takes place fully clothed, lying comfortably on a treatment table. After an initial conversation, the treatment begins with gentle contact, often at the feet, sacrum, spine, shoulders, neck or head.
Depending on your needs, a session may include:
-
Gentle craniosacral touch
-
Fascial release
-
Work with the sacrum, spine, neck and skull
-
Subtle mobilisation of tissues and membranes
-
Support for nervous system regulation
-
Body awareness and breath awareness
-
Somato-emotional release, when appropriate
-
Quiet integration and deep relaxation
The touch is usually very light and respectful. The treatment follows the body rather than imposing a technique on it.
Due to my experience with Chinese medicine, sessions may also include gentle acupressure and meridian-based bodywork, depending on your individual needs.
Who is Craniosacral Therapy suitable for?
Craniosacral therapy may be suitable for people who experience:
-
Physical tension
-
Stress and exhaustion
-
A feeling of nervous system overload
-
Head, neck or jaw tension
-
Back or pelvic tension
-
Inner restlessness
-
Emotional overwhelm
-
Reduced body awareness
-
A need for deep relaxation
-
A wish for gentle, holistic bodywork
Craniosacral therapy may also be appropriate for people who find strong massage or deep pressure too intense and prefer a quieter, more subtle form of touch.
What can you expect from a Craniosacral Therapy Session?
After an initial consultation, we will discuss your individual needs, wishes and current situation. The treatment is adapted to you and to what feels appropriate for your body at that moment.
A session may feel very quiet from the outside, but many clients experience inner processes such as warmth, softening, pulsing, images, emotions, memories, deep rest or simply a sense of arriving more fully in the body.
Craniosacral therapy is a complementary therapy and does not replace medical diagnosis or treatment. In the case of acute, severe or unclear symptoms, medical evaluation is recommended.
If you are unsure whether craniosacral therapy is suitable for your concerns, I invite you to contact me for an initial phone consultation. Treatments are offered in my practice in Berlin after an initial in-person consultation.
